CULTURE NEWS

  • Officials announced Tuesday that the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach now hosts three new species. The arrivals include Willow, a one-year-old opossum rescued as a baby, Maple, a striped skunk born at the Nashville Zoo, and Mahogany, a spectacled owl hatched at the Audubon Zoo, joining educational displays.  WHRO Public Media
  • State officials approved two sites for the Virginia Landmarks Register on March 19. In Newport News, the building now home to Pearlie’s Restaurant (formerly The Tavern and Grant’s Restaurant) honored its segregation era role, while Suffolk’s Ames-Old Farm, built in 1815, reflects early Tidewater farming life.  13 News Now

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Virginia Beach company plans to add 5,000 skilled trades jobs over the next five years to ease a worker shortage — its founder said the initiative will draw candidates from outside the industry and boost local apprenticeship programs.  13 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hampton University will offer a new course this fall that lets students design a living shoreline along the Hampton River near the University Marina. Funded by a grant and developed in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (and Wetlands Watch), it provides a hands-on approach to environmental research.  WTKR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local scientists say wastewater treatment plants and stormwater runoff still allow harmful chemicals, such as pharmaceuticals and microplastics, into waterways that affect fish reproduction and coastal businesses.
