  • Volunteer Hampton Roads will host its 27th Annual Family Volunteer Day today from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Regent University Library Plaza—families will pack hygiene and baby care kits, distribute food baskets and hot meals, work on building projects, and support an American Red Cross blood drive.  WTKR
  • FM99 and 106.9 Fox are hosting the 29th annual Mayflower Marathon Food Drive across five sites in Hampton Roads and northeastern North Carolina from 5:30 a.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Sunday—people can drop off non-perishable foods, Thanksgiving side dishes, turkeys and donations ahead of Thanksgiving.  13 News Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new Virginia climate assessment warns that rising sea levels—expected to accelerate after 2050—will increase flood risks and reduce home values in coastal Hampton Roads. The study links these changes to local factors such as land sinking from deep aquifer use and aging stormwater systems that may need major upgrades in coming decades.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Coast Guard Cutter Tampa returned to Hampton Roads yesterday after a 67-day deployment in the Eastern Pacific supporting Operation Pacific Viper—during the mission, the crew intercepted suspected drug smugglers and recovered 620 kg of cocaine, and family members welcomed them with signs and hugs. The crew now looks forward to some well-deserved rest after completing their duty.  WAVY
  • US Coast Guard Cutter Tampa, WMEC 902 returned on Friday to Portsmouth—arriving at 10 a.m.—after a 67-day patrol in the Eastern Pacific Ocean as part of Operation Pacific Viper. The crew helped counter transnational criminal organizations and prevent illegal narcotics from reaching American shores.  WTKR

  • Riverside Health has introduced SABR, a new lung cancer care program that uses robotic bronchoscopy to place dye and then remove lung nodules in one session—cutting the need for multiple appointments. The program aims to reduce hospital stays, lower repeated anesthesia risks, and lessen care costs while expanding access for patients who meet screening guidelines.  13 News Now
  • George Barlow from Virginia Beach had his life saved when a routine lung cancer screening found a tumor on his right lung—and he had surgery soon after that removed it without needing further treatment. Doctor Sherif El-Mahdy said low-dose CT scans help patients with key risk factors and screenings are now available at local facilities including Sentara Careplex Hampton.  WTKR
  • A community health resource fair was held Friday in Portsmouth and another is happening today at the Kenny Wallace Neighborhood Resource Center in Hampton from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—attendees can receive free screenings such as a 3D mammogram and blood pressure checks along with a $25 grocery gift card and Thanksgiving baskets for families in need.  13 News Now
  • Dr. Alvean Lyons discussed how to keep inner peace during the stressful holiday season on Another View—she offered advice for those facing financial or social pressure. The program also paid tribute to local NFL great Kenny Easley, who passed away last week.  WHRO Public Media
