EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hampton University senior Ashton Burton overcame a 2022 plane crash and received his naval aviation contract earlier this week—he trained for years and is now set to pursue his dream of flying.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Sept.30, the VPPSA ended its contract with Tidewater Fibre which caused major changes to curbside recycling for residents on the Peninsula—affecting York County, James City County, and Williamsburg. Poquoson secured an emergency renewal that kept recycling on Fridays while local officials worked to find new contracts and drop-off options.  WTKR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Due to ongoing mold remediation at its main branch, Hampton's library is closed and voters will cast ballots at the visual arts center for the Nov. 4 election. City officials said the work will last six more weeks—ensuring the facility is safe for its collections.  WTKR
  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order today to bar biological males from girls' and women's sports and locker rooms—he directed the state Board of Health to draft regulations after a petition from female athletes. The order builds on current policies aimed at protecting privacy and safety.  WTKR
  • Abigail Spanberger leads Winsome Earle-Sears by 10 points in a poll from Emerson College as the government shutdown continues. With Election Day on November 4, Virginia voters may see the shutdown affect their choice for governor—candidates focus on jobs and the economy.  13 News Now
  • The government shutdown is expected to make feeding families harder as the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore warned that USDA food shipments may drop and lines could grow if the shutdown lasts more than a week. The agency is working with 225 partners (including naval base areas) and needs more volunteers (to boost support) to reach those in need.  WAVY
  • U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott is inviting middle and high school students to join the Congressional App Challenge, where they will design apps to solve everyday problems. The winning project will earn a trip to Washington D.C. and all participants will attend a local reception, with submissions due by Oct. 27.  The Hampton Roads Messenger
