COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hampton City and the Aberdeen Gardens neighborhood dedicated an accessibility ramp at the historic museum on Oct 1—built with a grant from the Dominion Energy Charitable Fund and installed by W.F. Magann Corp—that now helps visitors using wheelchairs, canes, and walkers enter the museum. City leaders and museum officials celebrated this step as a move toward making the historic site accessible to everyone.  City of Hampton
  • October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and local groups plan events across Hampton Roads to support survivors and raise awareness. One event is the sold-out Women Against Violence Luncheon in Virginia Beach on Oct. 3, with additional vigils, galas, a summit, a walk and a financial empowerment program on later dates—each organized by community groups.  WAVY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Attorneys general from five states—Virginia, Washington, Arizona, Connecticut and New York—filed a lawsuit in the Eastern District of Virginia yesterday against Zillow and RedFin for a deal that ended RedFin's apartment rental ad business and reduced competition. The suit follows a similar filing by the Federal Trade Commission, and both companies maintain that the deal benefits property managers and renters.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Teri and Patrick Caserta, whose son Brandon died by suicide in 2018 and whose efforts helped pass the Brandon Act for better mental health support, say Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's review of military leadership definitions—designed to lessen accountability—will put service members at risk. They plan to meet with Hegseth to ensure that new policy changes preserve the protections established by the law.  WAVY
  • Local food pantries in Hampton Roads report that the ongoing government shutdown is straining supplies and increasing demand from families facing hardships. At Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Food Pantry, officials say lost funding and job losses are pushing donations down—experts fear shortages soon.  WTKR

  • Sentara’s Crawlin’ Crab Half Marathon will take place this weekend in Hampton with a half marathon, 5K, kids mile and the Shell Yeah Challenge from Friday—Oct.3 to Sunday—Oct.5, and local drivers are advised to plan for road closures and delays.  WAVY
