COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Virginia Natural Gas celebrated its 175th anniversary by donating $175,000 to Union Mission Ministries and formally presented the grant on Sept. 18—its employees also aided the mission’s daily operations. The gift supports the agency’s emergency shelter, meals, and job training programs.  WAVY
  • Veteran volunteers from American Legion Post 327 began building Habitat for Humanity’s 250th home in Suffolk on Monday — the new home, called the Jimmy Carter Foundation Legacy Home, will serve a single mother and her child with a 0% interest mortgage once she completes the required sweat equity. Habitat for Humanity noted that builds like this typically take about six months to complete depending on weather.  13 News Now

  • Target will hire over 300 seasonal employees in its supply chain facilities in Hampton Roads for the holiday season—these new roles offer health, financial, and scheduling benefits and may lead to full-time positions after the season.  WAVY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Dominion Energy advises customers to ready their homes for winter by checking HVAC systems, sealing air leaks, and using a budget billing plan—based on past usage—to help manage heating costs expected to rise by 7.6%, while also offering $600 in winter assistance.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Glenn Youngkin visited Paul D. Camp Community College in Smithfield on Wednesday to celebrate the opening of the Isle Maritime Trades Academy Lab School—created in partnership with Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding and Isle of Wright County schools to offer high school students hands-on maritime training.  WAVY

  • Delegate Shelly Simonds from Newport News said on Sept 22 she wants to end parking minimums to help developers build more homes—rules that she says have long blocked needed housing and forced local governments to limit growth.  WHRO Public Media
  • The Pentagon is planning to delay a nationwide PFAS testing program—up to 10 years—to check for toxic chemicals in firefighting foam at military sites. Old Dominion University researcher Eva Doty and Rep. Jen Kiggans warned that the delay could raise risks of cancer, heart disease, and fertility issues in local communities.  WAVY
  • Mary the tunnel-boring machine broke through onto the south island of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel on Wednesday afternoon as onlookers cheered the milestone—Gov. Glenn Youngkin and transportation officials said the nearly $4 billion project will double capacity and is set to finish by spring 2027.  WTKR
  • Old Dominion University hired Marty Irvine, Jr. as its new Associate Vice President for National Security Initiatives — he served 27 years in the Navy and will work to strengthen ties with the Pentagon and local defense partners.
