CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, thousands attended a preview screening of Ken Burns’ documentary The American Revolution at Yorktown Battlefield—hosted by Colonial National Historical Park, WHRO Public Media, York County Economic & Tourism Development, and the VA250 Commission—to learn about key events of the war. Attendees also enjoyed a Revolutionary Festival with live music and remarks by co-director David Schmidt, a Virginia Peninsula native, while future screenings are set for Nov. 13.  WHRO Public Media
  • WHRO-FM will broadcast Giuseppe Verdi’s opera Rigoletto — a live performance from LA Opera — this Saturday, September 27 at 1 p.m.  WHRO Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hampton University students earned second place in the Moguls in the Making pitch competition held in Detroit from Sept. 11-14, where 50 HBCU teams competed for over $200k in scholarships by presenting ideas to boost economic mobility. Their project FuelU, which tackles food insecurity at community colleges, rewarded each team member with a $10k scholarship.  The Hampton Roads Messenger
  • Old Dominion University was recognized in the 2026 U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges Rankings for the eighth time, placing it in the top 30% of national universities and as one of eight top public schools in Virginia — its nursing and business programs also rose in ranking.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Army Corps of Engineers is finalizing plans to build a new 10-acre island—using dredged material to create a permanent habitat for the seabird colony displaced from HRBT’s South Island. The $15.9 million project will involve 65% federal funding and move into detailed design before construction begins in 2027.  WHRO Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Sept 23, 2023, the Hampton Department of Public Works reminded residents to bag their leaves and grass clippings instead of blowing them into the street—this prevents debris from clogging gutters and causing flooding from blocked storm drains. Residents were advised to use clear plastic bags for yard waste on trash day or rake leaves into plant beds for mulch.  City of Hampton
  • Early voting in Virginia has shown strong action as over 35,000 ballots were cast by Sept. 21—an increase of 117% from 2021—indicating that many voters have decided early. Professor Rich Meagher said the data does not measure voter enthusiasm, and residents can vote at their local registrar’s office until November 1.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new Medicare program called GUIDE is offering free respite care and personal support for dementia patients and unpaid caregivers in Virginia—providing up to 72 hours of relief and on-demand virtual help for daily tasks. The program began on July 1 and is available for those on Medicare Parts A and B who are not receiving hospice care.  13 News Now
