ECONOMY NEWS

  • Norfolk International Airport reported that over 487,000 passengers flew through in August—a 1.2% increase from last August—with Allegiant and Frontier showing jumps of 56% and 57% respectively.  WAVY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Sandy Bottom Nature Park has been awarded a grant of more than $136,000 from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Recreational Trails Program to fund trail improvements and boost accessibility — the City of Hampton noted 11 other areas also received similar grants in 2025.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hampton Roads Transit is hosting career fairs starting Monday the 22nd in Norfolk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to recruit bus drivers amid a nationwide shortage, and the agency is using bus driver simulation training to prepare operators for challenges like rain, snow, and equipment failures—helping them learn before hitting the road.  WTKR
  • WTKR streamed the NAS Oceana Air Show free on Saturday — and is streaming it free today on wtkr.com and its mobile apps with coverage from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Blue Angels performing at 3 p.m.  WTKR
  • The Coast Guard Cutter Spencer returned to port in Portsmouth after an 83-day patrol in the Caribbean Sea and Windward Passage—its crew intercepted an overloaded boat off Haiti carrying 191 people—and provided food, water, and screenings before returning them to Haiti.  WAVY

  • On Friday night, Nansemond River beat Western Branch 40-6, Bayside beat Salem 34-21, and I.C. Norcom beat Manor 38-8 as the Southeastern District gauntlet began. Fans will watch Oscar Smith face Indian River on Saturday — a pivotal matchup in this sports series.  WTKR
