COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in Hampton Roads was ranked the fourth most iconic bridge view in the U.S. by Sixt based on data including height, length, traffic and online searches—adding to local pride. Crews are building a new two-lane tunnel under Thimble Shoal Channel so that the new tunnel will carry southbound traffic and the existing tunnel will serve northbound traffic—using a tunnel boring machine for the first time in the mid-Atlantic.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • Several historically black colleges—including Hampton University, Alabama State, Southern University and Bethune-Cookman—locked down their campuses after threats on Thursday, with classes canceled and non-essential staff evacuated and some campuses easing restrictions only for verified students and staff through Friday.  WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Virginia Symphony Orchestra begins its 105th season today in Hampton Roads with performances including Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony and Schubert’s Cello Quintet; the season (American Spirit and Symphonic Brilliance) will feature over 25 American composers and soloists as part of America250 celebrations.  WHRO Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia Gov. Youngkin has called on all Virginians to join in a moment of prayer and reflection at noon today for Charlie Kirk—a conservative influencer fatally shot on Sept. 10 in Utah—while state flags fly at half-mast until sunset Sunday.  WAVY
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin announced that Virginia’s general fund revenues increased 7% to $286.9 million in the first two months of Fiscal Year 2026 and that August revenue rose 6.8% to $132.7 million compared to last August—figures that surpassed monthly and year-to-date forecasts while giving the state over $1.8 billion in extra funds as it begins planning its next biennial budget in December.  The Hampton Roads Messenger
