COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Hampton launched a contest — installing oversized picture frames at Buckroe Beach, Mill Point Park, Bluebird Gap Farm, Sandy Bottom Nature Park and Air Power Park — to celebrate its fifth All-America City designation and invite residents and visitors to post photos on social media with the tag PictureThisHampton to win prizes by the end of the month.  City of Hampton

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11 in Hampton Roads with several remembrance events scheduled — including a 9 a.m. ceremony at the Harry E. Diezel Fire Training Center in Virginia Beach and an 11 a.m. ceremony at Portsmouth's High Street Landing — and more activities planned in Norfolk, Chesapeake, Williamsburg, Arlington, and Outer Banks, with a 9/11 Heroes 5K run set for Sept. 20.  WAVY
  • THRIVE Peninsula will launch Sabor Familiar to bring Latin American flavors to Hampton Roads for Hispanic Heritage Month by opening a Hispanic foods section at The Market at Thrive on Sept. 15 and calling for donations during a food drive from Sept. 15—Oct. 15. In partnership with Newport News, it will host a community mixer on Sept. 16 at 12749 Nettles Drive from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  WAVY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin ordered that the United States and Virginia flags be flown at half-staff on all state and local buildings to honor nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001 and the heroes who rescued others—flags will be lowered at sunrise today and remain half-staff until sunset.  The Hampton Roads Messenger
  • Air Force veteran Dylan Borland testified Tuesday before a congressional committee that he saw a 100-foot triangle craft at Langley that interfered with his phone during a night shift — his report of the incident later led to retaliation and workplace harassment and drove him to become a whistleblower concerned with a sensitive national security issue.  WAVY

HEALTH NEWS

  • As fall and winter approach, the Virginia Department of Health advised residents to get a flu vaccine by the end of October and practice good hygiene to help prevent flu and other respiratory viruses from spreading—especially for young children, older adults, pregnant women and those with weak immune systems. Local pharmacies and doctors will offer vaccines as the season progresses.  WAVY
