  • World War II veteran Purcell Bailey celebrated his 106th birthday in Surry County as family and friends honored his Army service and work with the Williamsburg CCC during the 1930s and 40s—acknowledging his century-long legacy.  13 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Two teens were injured in a shooting at a bus stop near the intersection of Orcutt Avenue and Friendly Drive in Hampton Tuesday afternoon—one teen was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound while the other received treatment for a graze wound during a fight in which firearms were used.  WTKR
  • Yorktown sailor Master at Arms 2nd Class Jackson Bower pleaded guilty to dereliction of duty in connection with a boating accident on the York River that killed Master-at-Arms Third Class Lyndon Joel Cosgriff-Flax in April 2024—he was sentenced to 70 days of confinement and will face an other-than-honorable discharge after his time is served.  WHRO Public Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fox and the Bear, an indie-folk duo from Hampton Roads, released its second album—Feels Like Home—with songs years in the making. The duo will hold a special album release show on September 20th at The Annex in Norfolk with Logan Vath and Tanya Gallagher.  WHRO Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 9, the International Longshoremen’s Association filed a lawsuit against the Port of Virginia and CEO Stephen Edwards for allegedly forcing new rail crane technology on workers without notice — a move that the union said violated its contract signed in March. The union is seeking a trial by jury and a permanent ban on future interference with its contract.  WHRO Public Media
