  • The Community Outreach Coalition held a ribbon cutting ceremony today outside its new Workforce Training Center on Todd’s Ln in Hampton — the center will offer training in high-demand fields like cybersecurity and early childhood education to help people enroll in college or GED programs. CRIME NEWS

  • Hampton police say a man was shot and killed in a car on Sargeant Street early Friday morning—officers are investigating the scene and believe the incident is isolated.  WTKR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hampton University tackled rising tuition costs by speeding up aid delivery and offering more scholarships — nearly half of incoming freshmen received merit-based awards — while charging $30,842 in tuition, which is below the national average.  Hampton University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Motorists on I-64 west in Hampton should expect overnight full directional lane closures for overhead sign installations on Sept. 3 and 4 by VDOT—closures may extend to Sept. 5 if needed. Single-lane restrictions may begin at 10 p.m. on Sept. 2 and 3, and detours are in place for access from Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road via Woodland Road, East Mercury Boulevard, Old Buckroe Road, and North Armistead Avenue.  13 News Now
  • Admiral Daryl Caudle held an all-hands call on Thursday aboard the USS Harry S—Truman at Naval Station Norfolk where he discussed challenges such as shipbuilding, ordinance production, and improving conditions for sailors. During the call, sailors asked about healthcare, barracks conditions, and mental health, and Caudle said he will put sailors first as he works to boost naval readiness.  WAVY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Norfolk and Newport News Redevelopment and Housing Authorities have partnered with the Real Estate Developers Academy to train new developers to build affordable housing. The program — which began in Nashville and will launch its first cohort in Hampton Roads in January — requires an 18-to-20-month commitment to help address the region’s housing crisis.  13 News Now
