  • Hampton’s REaKTOR Business Technology Innovation Center won a Gold Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurial and Small Business Development on Aug. 21—an honor given by the International Economic Development Council ahead of its 2025 Annual Conference in Detroit. City officials say the award shows the center’s key role in boosting local high-tech innovation and job creation.  City of Hampton
  • Dominion Energy has fine-tuned its storm response nearly 22 years after Hurricane Isabel by sending Zaria Hockstedler ahead of repair crews to check for damage. She uses specialized safety gear and a V Watch to detect live wires and applies yellow caution tape around downed power lines—improving safety for the team.  WAVY

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The City of Hampton, working with Newport News, received a Gold Excellence in Economic Development Award from the International Economic Development Council on August 21 — recognizing their collaboration on the $72.3 million expansion of Liebherr’s mining facility to boost global demand. Their achievement will be honored in September at the IEDC Annual Conference in Detroit.  City of Hampton

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • VIMS researchers at the Batten School estimated that tidal marshes generate about $90 million a year for the Middle Peninsula. They developed an online tool—SHORE-BET—that uses computer models and interviews to help officials plan how to protect wetlands and reduce flood damage.  WHRO Public Media
  • On Aug. 21 at 4 p.m., Hampton’s James T. Wilson Fishing Pier at Buckroe and local beaches reopened, though water access remained restricted until Friday morning because dangerous surf and strong winds from Hurricane Erin still affected the area — city officials urged visitors to obey posted signs and staff instructions to keep everyone safe.  City of Hampton

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Jen Kiggans is sponsoring a bill called the TUTOR Act that would give teachers a tax credit of $500 to $1,000 if they tutor at least 150 hours a year outside the classroom—she introduced the bill with Rep. Eugene Vindman to help address low teacher salaries. The proposal now awaits additional co-sponsors and a committee review before the next vote, and teachers are encouraged to call their representatives.  WAVY
