Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 19th of August.
Good morning, Hampton.
🎓 Education
MIT researchers studied college students using ChatGPT and found that heavy AI use may lower brain activity needed for planning, memory, and impulse control.
Dr. David Spiegel from Eastern Virginia Medical School warned that relying on AI instead of thinking independently could hurt learning later — experts say AI should only assist rather than replace human effort.
🏛️ Government
Hampton’s City Council approved a five-year grant funding plan focused on community development and housing on Wednesday evening.
The plan—developed with resident input and including a flexible use permit policy—will be sent to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development while further talks on accessory dwelling units and public camping are set for the fall.
🏥 Health
Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton opened a free food locker—located by the emergency department—to help discharged patients and community members receive healthy, nonperishable food using a voucher or QR code.
Sentara plans to expand the service to more families and add fresh produce as demand grows.
