  • From August 20 through September 24, 2025, the Virginia Zoo is hosting Senior Wednesday events that offer free admission for seniors 62+ with a valid ID in honor of National Senior Citizens Day on August 21—seniors can join a bingo challenge and guest engagement activities during regular hours from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The zoo is also collecting historical photos from visitors for its upcoming 125th anniversary in 2026.  The Hampton Roads Messenger

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday afternoon, a house fire on Adams Circle in Hampton displaced two adults and one dog as firefighters controlled the blaze within three minutes of arrival—no injuries were reported and the American Red Cross was contacted for assistance.  WAVY

CRIME NEWS

  • A man was charged with burglary at Chilled Ponds at Yorktown after he tried to disguise himself by wearing a blonde wig and a dress during an 8:30 a.m. foot pursuit on Thursday — he had burglarized a skating rink on Aug. 12 and now faces charges including petit larceny, credit card theft, property damage and resisting arrest.  WAVY

  • City leaders in Hampton are preparing for potential Hurricane Erin impacts next week by warning beach visitors at Buckroe Beach and placing workers on standby to clear storm drains—officials say dangerous rip currents and choppy surf could make ocean conditions unsafe. Local residents are also making plans to relocate if flooding becomes a concern.  13 News Now
  • Multiple attorneys general led by Virginia AG Jason Miyares filed a petition for review in the U.S. Court of Appeals Thursday — challenging that the Department of Veterans Affairs misinterpreted a Supreme Court ruling and wrongfully denied eligible education benefits. The filing argued that the flawed policy hurt thousands of veterans — straining programs like VMSDEP that support military families in Virginia.  13 News Now
