ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A large fire produced heavy smoke from a structure on Pembroke Ave. near West Queen Street (and Settlers Landing Road) on Monday afternoon, and a local viewer recorded video while crews responded as officials await more details.  WAVY
  • Sgt. Quandarius D. Stanley, 23, was fatally injured on May 24 when a forklift struck him on board the USNS Roy P. Benavidez as soldiers rushed to offload humanitarian aid for Gaza—he was medevaced but later died in October after injuries that an Army investigation said were worsened by rushed loading orders and long hours.  WHRO Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City Council will receive an update on a focus group studying camping and storage on public property during its Wednesday meeting at City Hall (22 Lincoln St.).  City of Hampton
  • Jefferson Laboratory in Newport News is asking 65 workers to resign voluntarily by Aug. 26 as part of a restructuring plan to boost data science and artificial intelligence—if the 7% target is not met, layoffs may occur in January. The lab will decide on applications by Sept. 24 and most approved workers will leave on Oct. 15 with a severance package and ending health benefits after October.  WHRO Public Media
  • The Virginia Department of Social Services is sharing names, birthdates, addresses and Social Security numbers of SNAP users with the federal government after a USDA request in May—nearly 800,000 people in 400,000 households are included. An attorney and a state senator say the move may be used to cut benefits or target families with mixed immigration status.  WHRO Public Media
