CRIME NEWS

  • An Atlanta man—Malcolm Xavier Walker—is held at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail on a felony larceny charge after he allegedly scammed over $20,000 from a football player's father who sought recruiting help through promises of highlight videos and college trips that never materialized, with the scheme reportedly unfolding from last year until the victim uncovered the fraud in January.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hampton University cut the ribbon yesterday on a new workforce development center that will train students and community members in high-demand trades at three locations along Butler Farm Road and Eaton Street—an effort funded by a $2 million grant from Rep. Bobby Scott. University leaders said the program returns the school to its vocational roots and aims to meet the urgent need for skilled workers in trades such as welding.  WAVY

  • Hampton Roads Transit, the City of Norfolk and Norfolk State University will offer free parking and transit options during the football season to help Spartan fans travel easily. Fans can park at MacArthur South and North garages + board NSU buses or use free rides from the Tide two hours before and after games.  WAVY
  • 85-year-old Marine Medal of Honor recipient Harvey Barnum is honored as the Navy names a new destroyer after him — the USS Harvey C Barnum will be christened in Norfolk next year. Barnum met with the Navy League in Virginia Beach and has spoken with the future crew to share his Navy experience.  WHRO Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Families in Hampton face long waits for youth mental health services as there are not enough specialists, and the Virginia Mental Health Access Project trains primary care doctors to screen and refer children for care. The program has helped thousands and recently connected a mom to treatment for her 13-year-old son within four weeks—offering a faster way to get help.  WHRO Public Media
  • Health officials warn that leaving medications in a hot car or exposing them to high temperatures can lower their effectiveness and may increase the risk of heat-related illness—patients should store drugs in cool conditions and inspect them for changes before use.
