  • Visionaries for Change — a giving circle from Hampton Roads Community Foundation that funds local nonprofits with grants — marked its five-year anniversary as it grew from $100,000 to over $1 million in endowment and added more than 120 members while awarding $30,500 to help organizations like Hearts Full of Grace serve families in need.  WHRO Public Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • WHRO-FM will broadcast Puccini’s final opera Turandot this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.—the production from the Royal Opera House features Sondra Radvanovsky in the title role and airs on radio and online.  WHRO Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia inspectors have found the invasive box tree moth for the first time on properties in Clarke and Loudoun that have boxwood plants at risk. Officials plan to treat these sites to slow the natural spread as experts warn that the moth could produce three generations each year in the state (raising concern that it may eventually reach Hampton Roads).  WAVY

  • The City of Hampton has started an online survey to help make traffic safer for drivers and walkers, funded by a U.S. Department of Transportation grant. The survey results will help shape a safety plan for high-risk spots like the Mercury Boulevard and Power Plant Parkway/Todds Lane intersection—residents are asked to share their ideas.  WTKR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia has reported 50 vibrio cases so far this year as warmer water appears to help the flesh-eating bacteria spread; North Carolina also reported 59 cases and health experts see a possible link to climate change. Health officials advise swimmers to cover cuts and avoid raw shellfish — they say the beach remains safe if proper precautions are taken.  WAVY
