EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Hampton City Schools will host Education Matters tomorrow at noon with Dr. John Caggiano, deputy superintendent who will discuss the award-winning instructional toolkit — a tool that helps lower dropout rates and shape new teaching plans. - ➤ Maurica Bynum, a Tidewater native, began her role as an assistant professor at the Joint School of Public Health at Norfolk State in Spring — after six years with the Virginia Department of Health — and she earned her degrees from Virginia Wesleyan, EVMS and East Carolina University. - ➤ The Navy will decide by the end of summer if it will test more private drinking water wells near Naval Air Station Oceana for forever chemicals—PFAS linked to cancer have been found in firefighting foams and have led to alternative water sources for some households. The testing is part of a wider effort to check wells near military sites following new safety standards. WHRO Public Media
- ➤ The Chesapeake Bay Foundation marked a big milestone in its Hampton River restoration project by installing 650 oyster shell bags on a 1,078 linear-foot shoreline built with oyster castles; more than 200 volunteers & local residents helped with the work. Volunteers began the next part on July 7 by planting thousands of plugs to restore the wetland and reduce erosion. WTKR

- ➤ The City Council met on July 7 at City Hall—22 Lincoln St.—for a work session and a legislative session that included a public hearing to discuss rezoning the former Wood’s Orchards property on East Mercury Boulevard from low-density to high-density residential following the Planning Commission’s recommendation; Wood’s Orchards, a local business that operated for more than 80 years, closed its doors in September 2024. - ➤ The Hampton Clean City Commission will offer an upcycling class on July 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at its office that shows how to turn old items into planters — supplies are provided or participants can bring their own plant, with seating limited so pre-registration is required. WTKR
