  • Today, a new restaurant opens in Hampton at 1771 N. King St. near Langley Air Force Base to serve soul food with a Caribbean flair while employing seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities including the owner’s grandson who has autism. Co-owner Julie Rainey started the business after her previous restaurant closed during the pandemic and hopes to provide fair job opportunities for those in need.  WTKR
  • HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding furloughed more than 400 employees—471 salaried shipbuilders were affected by a review of workforce needs—with the move intended to boost accountability and efficiency to meet commitments to the U.S. Navy.  WAVY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ms. Martha Reads celebrated five years with a special episode featuring renowned poet Alexander Kwame — who joined her in reading a story by a PBS Kids contest winner — and it still airs every Friday at 10 a.m. The program began during school closures to support child learning and now gives young authors a chance to share their own work.  WHRO Public Media

  • Norfolk International Airport will host Global Entry interviews next week on June 4, 5 and 6 with 80 interviews scheduled each day between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. near Baggage Claim—while a new Customs and Border Patrol facility is under construction to support future international operations.  WTKR
