  • According to the Federation of Virginia Foodbanks, one in nine Virginians faces food insecurity, with Black and Hispanic households twice as likely to struggle and about one-third of those affected being children. Local experts Leah Williams-Rumbley (Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and The Eastern Shore) and Jay Boone (President of K.U. S. P. and co-chair of the Norfolk Food Policy Council) are working to improve food access in Hampton Roads.  WHRO Public Media

  • Hampton police are searching for a suspect after a man was shot on Greenbriar Avenue Friday afternoon when a verbal altercation led to a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening—detectives urge anyone with information to call the Crime Line.  13 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Three Phoebus High students in Hampton will receive associate degrees from Virginia Peninsula Community College before finishing high school through Hampton City Schools’ ACE Academy. They earned GPAs over 4.0 and plan to attend VCU or LSU—showing how the program gives them a head start in college.  WTKR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lynnhaven River Now, a local nonprofit, will remove up to 100 abandoned boats from Hampton Roads waterways over the next year, beginning next week with removals from Willoughby Bay — the boats have created hazards near a Naval Station. The project is funded by the NOAA Marine Debris Program — and involves local municipalities, the US NAVY, the Virginia Marine Resource Commission and Clean Virginia Waterways.  WAVY

  • Army Training and Doctrine Command will leave Fort Eustis as part of a major reorganization that will merge its functions with Army Futures Command in Austin, Texas — Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George said the change is part of a Defense Department plan to consolidate commands nationwide while details on relocation and personnel remain pending.  WHRO Public Media
  • Hampton NAACP president Gaylene Kanoyton and Virginia State University political scientist Dr. Wes Bellamy will speak near a historic slave auction site as part of the State of the People Power Tour—an effort to encourage voting and activate grassroots community leaders in response to recent presidential executive orders. The tour will also include workshops and listening sessions in multiple cities to help shape public opinion.  WAVY
