CRIME NEWS

  • The Hampton BMX Track’s work truck was vandalized when its windows were smashed between May 4 and May 6, and a local auto shop repaired it free so donated funds can be used for other repairs + police are investigating without any arrests.  WTKR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Glenn Youngkin paused over $600 million in funding for renovation projects at 10 Virginia colleges—impacting institutions such as Virginia State University and Central Virginia Community College—as state economic forecasts remain uncertain. He said the projects will be reintroduced in his December budget proposal if funds remain available.  WHRO Public Media
  • Four of WHRO Public Media's online courses earned the internationally recognized Quality Matters Certification Mark after a rigorous review process. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hampton joined a regional initiative to address homelessness after the Virginia Peninsula Homelessness Study was released on May 15, which found a lack of affordable housing, substance abuse, and unemployment to be significant factors. City officials will work with neighboring jurisdictions + a regional workgroup to build coordinated strategies with recommendations expected within 90 days.  City of Hampton
  • Governor Glenn Youngkin signed two bills in Richmond on Thursday to improve Virginia’s foster care system—ensuring that parents and foster kids over 12 can reach the Office of the Children’s Ombudsman. Chesapeake resident Katie Jones, who experienced gaps in care as a foster child, said the bills will help hold agencies accountable for following the law.  WAVY
