  • Hampton’s new Sensory Activation Vehicle is now available for rental at school events, sports meets, and community gatherings to offer a mobile space with interactive stations and wheelchair access — it was donated by the Coliseum Business Improvement District and the city will hold a ribbon-cutting event at 2 p.m. Thursday outside City Hall.  City of Hampton

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, WHRO-FM airs the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto cycle at 9:00 p.m. with famed pianist Olga Kern playing with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra in a performance recorded in Hampton Roads. The show also looks ahead to more local concerts including a May performance by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet & other music events coming soon.  WHRO Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials in Hampton Roads said a regional coalition (Stop Syphilis) led by the Virginia Department of Health will launch next month to boost syphilis testing, education and treatment at Sentara Health clinics and emergency rooms amid a steady rise since the early 2000s (642 early and 330 late cases reported in 2024). Norfolk Health Director Susan Girois said increased testing for pregnant people is expected to help prevent congenital syphilis and serious health issues.  WHRO Public Media
  • The Hampton-Newport News Suicide Prevention Task Force—partnering with local schools—has launched the Let Your Creativity S.P.E.A.K. Campaign to give middle and high school students a way to share messages of hope and mental health using art, writing, music and videos. Submissions are due by Friday, April 18 and the work will be displayed on Saturday, May 10 at Brittingham-Midtown Community Center—winners will be chosen for first, second and third place.  The Hampton Roads Messenger
