ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 25th, the Elizabeth River Project in Norfolk launched a native seed library offering free native seeds to boost local wetlands and biodiversity—with a focus on marsh grasses and Indigenous seed-keeping traditions. The nonprofit partnered with Old Dominion University and received a $35,000 grant from JP Doherty Foundation—while Diane Wilson is set to speak on April 3 at 6 p.m. at the Ryan Resilience Lab.  WHRO Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Youngkin added back $120M to fund tuition waivers for the VMSDEP program through a budget amendment on March 28th—lawmakers must now approve the move next week for the funding to remain. The decision comes as colleges report rising costs and enrollment for the program has grown over recent years.  WHRO Public Media
  • First responders from across Hampton Roads took part in hands-on training with the Norfolk Southern Safety Train as they learned to handle hazardous materials and inspect rail equipment up close (the train featured a locomotive numbered 911 and provided a chance to test response techniques). The session marked the first time in five years that such a thorough training drill was available, helping local responders prepare for potential rail incidents.  WAVY
