Good morning, Hampton. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 27th of March.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Youngkin vetoed major cannabis reform bills that would have set up a regulated retail market and revised penalties for past cannabis offenses—critics say the move deepens the gap with those pushing for safer, legal sales. Lawmakers plan to propose new ideas soon to create a system that protects public safety and boosts state revenue.  WHRO Public Media
  • Hampton drivers on I-64 near the Hampton River Bridge and Mallory Street overpass will see lanes shift inward by the median as VDOT works on the express lanes project. The change will be in place by the end of this week and include overnight ramp closures—drivers should follow posted signs and consider alternate routes.  13 News Now
  • Sen. Mark Warner said local families deserve better after sensitive military details were mistakenly shared on the Signal app during an attack report on Houthis — a mistake that raised concerns about service member safety as the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group was deployed. Sen. Tim Kaine and other lawmakers described the process as amateurish and called for stronger safeguards.  WTKR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A report released Tuesday showed that home sales fell by 9% in February compared to last year, with Hampton selling 126 homes—a drop of 19.2%. Local realtors say March has started strong as new listings appear and many homes quickly go under contract.  WTKR
