ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A kitchen fire at New Hampton Commons Apartments on Geddy Drive in the Briarfield area displaced four residents, one cat, and one dog just before noon on Monday, and fire crews extinguished the blaze in 25 minutes after determining unattended cooking caused the heavy smoke while the Red Cross provided assistance.  13 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College Park Elementary held its third African American Read-In on March 20 when WHRO Public Media host Lisa Godley read her favorite book to students — fifth-grade ambassadors helped guide guest readers through the day. The event built on the school's tradition of linking community voices with local leadership and celebrating books by and about people of color.  WHRO Public Media
  • Williamsburg-James City County Schools awarded MGT Impact Solutions a contract of more than $150,000 to craft a redistricting plan that will adjust school boundaries as new preschool centers are built to ease crowding at elementary schools. Groundbreaking is set for spring and the centers will be ready by August to add room for over 100 more pre-K students and allow for the removal of temporary classroom trailers.  WHRO Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • VDOT contractors began a $78.6 million project last year to improve traffic on Wythe Creek Road from Langley Boulevard to Carys Chapel Road—this included widening the road, constructing a 1,545-foot bridge over the Northwest Branch Back River, installing new signals, adding sidewalks, and upgrading street lighting and drainage, with motorists experiencing lane closures and shifts while access to businesses, homes, and marine routes was maintained.  City of Hampton
  • The National Park Service is asking residents in Virginia and North Carolina for input on a possible National Heritage Area as part of the Great Dismal Swamp study—comments can be submitted from March 19th through May 19th. Virtual meetings will be held on March 25th at 4 p.m. and March 26th at noon and 6 p.m., and the study will last until 2026 before the final report is sent to Congress.  WAVY
