CULTURE NEWS

  • Local singer and songwriter Roberta Lea created the Too Much of a Woman Festival to celebrate women's empowerment with workshops, panel discussions and live music. The event will take place on Saturday, March 7 at The American Theatre and includes a 9 p.m. performance by Lea (tickets cost $53).  WHRO Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hampton University has partnered with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to offer a course that will have 10 students build a 1,200-ft living shoreline (mixing wetlands and oyster habitat) across from Settlers Landing Bridge next school year.   • Lawmakers are proposing two bills that will set guidelines for AI use in public schools, one (Senate Bill 394) establishing a pilot program with annual reporting and another (House Bill 1186) banning mandatory AI chatbot use, with changes expected before the March 14 legislative deadline.  WHRO Public Media
  • Last week, PRA Group’s Black Excellence Employee Resource Group hosted a back-to-school drive to donate children’s books to WHRO Public Media for early literacy programs.   • USS Gerald R. Ford sailors continue their Middle East deployment amid military operations with Iran. Local officials in Norfolk and nearby families are watching closely as the carrier, which left Norfolk last June, remains on an extended mission with an uncertain timeline.  WTKR
  • A new analysis shows that the housing voucher program in Hampton Roads offers little choice as most available homes are in high-poverty neighborhoods—leaving many users with limited options. A single mother in Norfolk, for example, eventually moved into an affordable apartment that was not her first choice.  WHRO Public Media
  • Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger ordered that all state and local buildings lower their flags to half-staff on Saturday, March 7 to honor Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. The tribute will run from sunrise to sunset as a nod to his decades of service as a minister & community leader.  13 News Now
  • VDOT plans overnight lane closures for King Street at the I-64 overpass starting Tuesday at 10 p.m. through Wednesday at 5 a.m.—drivers will follow detours along Mercury Boulevard and East Pembroke Avenue, and if weather hinders, closures may shift to Thursday as crews install girders for the express lanes project.  13 News Now
