CULTURE NEWS

  • WHRO Public Media hosted a screening of All Creatures Great & Small yesterday ahead of its Season 6 premiere, drawing hundreds who also brought pet food for donation at the Norfolk Animal Care Center.   • The Virginia Symphony will honor Martin Luther King Jr. with concerts featuring a commissioned piece by Curtis Stewart and the Norfolk State University Choir — the tribute events are set for Jan. 18 at Sandler Center in Virginia Beach and Jan. 20 at Norcom High School in Portsmouth with registration encouraged.  WHRO Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local organizations and colleges are expanding apprenticeship programs to boost skilled careers in manufacturing, healthcare and tech; a $6 million federal grant has funded the Workforce Council’s Apprenticeship Hub plus Tidewater Community College now sponsors training sessions, though progress still lags behind top states and Europe.  WHRO Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Virginia has launched a new website called SWaN — a tool to show wetland credit data. Developed with Water Ledger, the free platform lets market participants view credits by watershed and will eventually charge a subscription fee.  WHRO Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers feel confused by the new red light camera at Settlers Landing Rd. and William R. Harvey Way. City officials say ticket revenue goes to traffic improvements & the cameras will remain in place until the HRBT expansion project is complete in 2027, though some locals hope for a redesign.  WTKR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kaiser Permanente has agreed to a $46 million settlement for allegedly sharing personal health data via its online platforms from Nov. 2017 to May 2024. Virginia members and others will get a mailed notice with a unique claim ID to file for a cash payment of about $20 to $40.  13 News Now
  • Virginia officials aim to lower drug prices in the upcoming legislative session by reintroducing a Prescription Drug Affordability Board bill — a bipartisan effort modeled on federal approaches to cut costs for common medicines. The measure seeks to help make essential drugs more affordable for residents.  WHRO Public Media
