  • Geno's Steaks will open its first location outside of Pennsylvania on Thursday at Power Plant Hampton Roads, featuring an 8,000 sqft arcade and waterfront patio. The Philadelphia restaurant will offer free sandwiches to the first 100 customers starting at 11 a.m.  WTKR

CULTURE NEWS

  • Raymond Jones hosts A Local Touch today at 9:00 p.m. on WHRO-FM, featuring Virginia-linked musical selections from recordings at Sandler Center and past local concerts. Listeners can tune in online or via 90.3 for an evening of classic and modern pieces.  WHRO Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia nursing leaders warn that a proposed federal rule cutting loan limits for graduate nursing programs may worsen local nursing shortages. They say lower borrowing caps could discourage nurses from pursuing advanced degrees as faculty vacancies already limit enrollment.  WHRO Public Media
  • Virginia Peninsula Community College will rededicate its renovated Mary T. Christian Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. in Templin Hall as the new name highlights updated seating, advanced technology, and improved backstage features.  WHRO Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials in Hampton are installing a five-foot fence along Mercury Blvd between Seldendale Dr. and the Langley Square entrance to guide pedestrians to cross safely at designated intersections. Funded by VDOT, the project is expected to finish in early spring.  WTKR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health experts are urging residents to get the flu shot as a surge in influenza spreads across Hampton Roads. The vaccine takes two weeks for full effectiveness — local pharmacies continue to offer the shot while extra precautions are recommended.  13 News Now
