New Beech Grove Baptist Church in Newport News began collecting essential donations such as water, diapers and sanitary items for Texas flood victims and first responders, as announced by Pastor Willard Maxwell on Sunday. The church will send two trucks of donations on July 29 and aims to raise $8,000—$10,000 for recovery efforts.

VDOT announced on Wednesday that over $36 million in toll debt will be forgiven for drivers in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton and Franklin who earn less than $50,000 and whose bills are from trips made between 2014 and the end of 2023—Elizabeth River Crossings will also remove DMV registration holds for eligible drivers. This action is part of the state’s broader toll relief plan reached in the 2024-2026 budget.

After a long House Armed Services Committee session, the defense budget passed a version of the NDAA that offered a 3.8% pay raise for military personnel, $13 billion for shipbuilding, and TRICARE improvements—steps meant to bolster Hampton Roads' defense. Representative Jen Kiggans, a Navy veteran and nurse practitioner, said she supported sending F-35 fighters to NAS Oceana and urged Congress to modernize the fleet.
